Gestalt principles explain how people visually perceive relationships between objects

There are many principles from gestalt psychology that explain how people visually perceive relationships between objects.

  • Similarity
  • Proximity
  • Closure
  • Simplicity
  • Figure-ground relationship
  • Common fate: elements moving in the same direction seem related
  • Law of symmetry
  • Uniform connectedness
  • Common region (enclosure)
  • Closure: people tend to fill in details when an image is incomplete (i.e. they recognize a pattern and fill in the details)
  • Good continuation
  • Law of isomorphic correspondence
  • Law of focal point
